Os cientistas David Gilley, da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Indiana, nos Estados Unidos, e Connie Eaves, do Laboratório Terry Fox da Agência para o Câncer em Vancouver, no Canadá, afirmam ter descoberto a origem do câncer de mama.

Partindo do princípio de que, na maioria das vezes, a doença se desenvolve nos ductos que levam o leite materno até o mamilo, eles desenvolveram o estudo com mulheres que não tiveram câncer, mas precisaram reduzir os seios por questões estéticas.

“O que procurávamos eram possíveis vulnerabilidades em células normais que fizeram com que se tornassem malignas”, disse David Gilley em entrevista à BBC.

Eles descobriram um tipo de células-mãe que está em todas as mulheres, inclusive as que não tem tendência a ter câncer de mama, onde os telômeros (suportes que formam as pontas dos cromossomos) são mais curtos que o comum.

Ao descobrir isso, os cientistas entenderam que as pequenas extremidades dos cromossomos tornam as células-mãe sujeitas a mutações que desenvolvem o câncer de mama. Os especialistas explicam que essas células se multiplicam em células conhecidas como diferenciadas ou finais, que formam o dúcto mamário.

Ainda que todas as mulheres tenham células-mãe com telômeros curtos, o câncer de mama se desenvolve apenas quando sua multiplicação  funciona mal, criando células malignas. Os cientistas entendem que compreender o que gera o câncer de mama pode servir em exames preventivos com amostras de tecidos e sangue. (Correio 24hs)
