Descoberta traz nova esperança contra a vassoura-de-bruxa

No ano em que se completa 30 anos da entrada da vassoura-de-bruxa na Bahia, muitas pesquisas estão em andamento para combater esta e outras doenças que ameaçam dizimar o chamado ouro negro das florestas tropicais. Além da vassoura-de-bruxa, praga que mais prejudicou a cacauicultura brasileira, os cientistas procuram respostas para combater outras dezenas de doenças e pragas que afetam os pomares, entre elas a podridão-parda. Uma solução definitiva pode ainda não ter sido alcançada, mas depois de décadas de estudos, os resultados concretos estão começando a aparecer. E a genética tem se consolidado como uma das principais ferramentas. Depois de testar 74 moléculas, um grupo de cientistas identificou uma capaz de agir contra a vassoura-de-bruxa. Por enquanto ela tem nome complicado, está sendo chamada de NPD 7j-41. Segundo os pesquisadores, a molécula é capaz de inibir a ação de uma enzima presente no fungo que causa a doença. A descoberta, publicada este mês na Revista Científica Pest Management Science, já vem sendo apontada como um marco inovador para a cacauicultura. Resultado de mais de duas décadas de pesquisas, a molécula aponta novos rumos para os cientistas. “Em vez de nos dedicarmos à formulação de um fungicida, como seria usual, nós vamos partir para a produção de uma substância que possa fortalecer o sistema imunológico do cacaueiro, para este conseguir destruir o patógeno”, afirma Gonçalo Amarante Pereira, coordenador do estudo e do laboratório de Genômica da Unicamp. *Ler mais nos Correios.
