Uma proteína encontrada na beterraba poderia ser usada para substituir o sangue humano, de acordo com pesquisadores suecos. A hemoglobina vegetal presente no legume é similar à hemoglobina presente no sangue humano.

A proteína, que confere ao sangue a sua cor avermelhada, tem como função principal transportar oxigênio para os tecidos. A equipe da Universidade de Lund, na Suécia, está investigando se seria possível modificar a substância da beterraba para que ela possa ser absorvida pelos tecidos humanos.

Os cientistas dizem acreditar que isso pode ser conseguido dentro de três anos. Um especialista ouvido pela BBC, no entanto, comentou que apesar de “animador”, o estudo só deve trazer resultados concretos “no longo prazo”.

Os suecos basearam seu estudo em um trabalho anterior, publicado pela revista científica Plant & Cell Physiology, que concluiu que a hemoglobina vegetal tinha um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento da planta.

Um dos integrantes da equipe, Leif Bulow, disse que o objetivo do grupo era encontrar uma solução para o problema da escassez de sangue.

O sangue produzido a partir da proteína da beterraba poderia ser usado, por exemplo, em transfusões de emergência (por exemplo, em pacientes que perderam muito sangue após um acidente) ou em tratamentos para câncer e doenças do sangue.

Similaridade
Durante o estudo, a proteína da planta se comportou de maneira similar à hemoglobina encontrada no cérebro – e apresentou uma estrutura similar, acrescentou Leif Bulow.

Nelida Leiva, que chefiou a pesquisa na Universidade de Lund, disse que a proteína da planta tem entre 50% e 60% de similaridade com a hemoglobina encontrada no sangue humano, mas é mais “robusta”.

Ela disse que o trabalho levanta duas possibilidades: adaptar a proteína da planta para uso em humanos e usar plantas para produzir hemoglobina humana.

O próximo passo, diz a equipe, seria modificar a proteína da planta para ver se ela seria aceita por porcos e, depois, por tecidos humanos.

Comentando o estudo sueco, o cientista britânico Denis Murphy, chefe de Genômica na University of South Wales, em Cardiff, País de Gales, disse à BBC: “O estudo é bom, baseado em ciência feita com rigor, e descreve uma descoberta importante”.

“Embora saibamos há várias décadas que plantas produzem proteínas similares à hemoglobina, esse estudo mostra que (essas proteínas) são mais comuns e estão envolvidas em mais processos fisiológicos do que pensávamos”.

Ele acrescentou, no entanto, que a ideia de usar essa proteína para substituir a hemoglobina humana era especulação, algo possível muito a longo prazo. (G1)
